The beautiful Town of Brookline, bordered by Newton and the City of Boston, was originally settled by European colonists in the 1600s as a hamlet of Boston known as Muddy River. Brookline was later incorporated as an independent Town in 1705. Its name is derived from the two small brooks which originally shaped its northern and southern borders.
The 2000 census lists Brookline's population at 57,107.
